Storm Amy brought severe gales and widespread rain to Scotland, with gusts exceeding 70 mph in exposed coastal areas and persistent downpours leading to localised flooding across the Highlands and northern isles.
What were the main impacts of Storm Amy in Scotland?
Storm Amy was named by the Met Office after a deep Atlantic low-pressure system intensified rapidly. Gusts reached 78 mph at Stornoway, and up to 60 mm of rain fell in the western Highlands within 24 hours. An amber wind warning covered northern Scotland, while yellow rain warnings were issued for much of the north-west. Transport was disrupted, with ferry cancellations and road closures reported, particularly on the A9 near the Cromarty Firth.
Which areas were most affected by Storm Amy?
The worst of the wind affected the Northern Isles, the north-west Highlands and the Moray Firth coast. Heavy rain concentrated over the western Highlands, causing surface water flooding on roads and affecting river levels. If you live in these areas, check for standing water before travelling. The rest of Scotland saw strong but less severe winds, with a yellow warning in place for much of the country. For the latest situation, visit our Moderate Rainfall Warning page.
Is Storm Amy still affecting Scotland?
Storm Amy moved away north-eastwards overnight, leaving behind some lingering showers and fresh winds. Conditions are improving gradually, with winds easing and rain becoming lighter through the morning.
When will conditions improve fully?
By Thursday afternoon, winds will drop to moderate breezes and rain will clear to scattered showers. A drier, brighter spell is expected for Friday across most of Scotland.
Is there a risk of flooding from Storm Amy?
Localised surface water flooding occurred in the western Highlands and parts of the north-east. Rivers are responding to the heavy rain, but no severe flood warnings were issued. Check the Scottish Environment Protection Agency for updates.
