If you’re heading to Newquay, the live forecast above tells you what to expect today. This Cornish seaside town has a mild but changeable maritime climate, so pack a waterproof and a sunhat – you might need both before the day is out.

Why does Newquay’s weather shift so quickly?

Newquay sits on the Atlantic coast, exposed to a procession of weather fronts rolling in from the west. That means sunshine can turn to drizzle in minutes, especially in autumn and winter. The Gulf Stream keeps winter lows around 4°C and summer highs near 19°C, so extreme temperatures are rare – but the wind can make it feel much cooler.

When should you visit for the best weather?

Late May to early September offers the warmest, driest conditions, with July and August averaging 18–20°C. Sea breezes keep things fresh, and surfers often prefer autumn for bigger swells. Even in summer, a light jacket is wise for evening walks along Fistral Beach.

Average January low4°C

Sunshine per year~1,600 hours
Is Newquay often windy?

Yes – being exposed to the Atlantic, Newquay gets moderate to strong winds, especially in winter. The prevailing south-westerlies can make it feel several degrees colder, so a windproof jacket is a good idea even on mild days.

Does it rain a lot in Newquay?

Newquay receives around 900mm of rain a year, spread fairly evenly. Showers are frequent but often short-lived. The wettest months are November to January, while April to June tend to be driest.

Can you swim in the sea at Newquay?

Sea temperatures peak around 16–17°C in August, so swimming is possible but brisk. Most surfers wear wetsuits year-round. Always check local tide and rip-current advice before entering the water.
