If you’re heading to the Kent coast today, check the live forecast above before stepping out – Dover’s weather can shift quickly thanks to its exposed Channel position, so a calm morning might turn breezy by lunchtime.

What’s the outlook for Dover today?

The live forecast above gives the details for the next few hours, but you can expect a fairly typical mix for this time of year. Dover often feels a couple of degrees cooler than inland Kent because of the sea breeze. Cloud cover tends to build from the east, so don’t be surprised if bright spells give way to overcast skies later. Rainfall is usually light and patchy when it arrives, but the wind can make it feel brisker than the thermometer suggests.

How does Dover’s coastal position affect the weather?

Being the closest English port to France, Dover sits in the narrowest part of the English Channel. That funnels the wind, meaning gusts can pick up suddenly – particularly around the White Cliffs. Sea fog is also more common here than in places further inland, especially in spring and early summer. If you’re planning a walk along the clifftops, the live forecast is your best guide for wind speed and visibility.

Average high (°C)12–14 in spring; 20–22 in summer
Average low (°C)5–7 in spring; 13–15 in summer
Rainfall (mm)Around 50–60 per month in autumn
Windiest monthJanuary (average 18 mph)
Does Dover get much snow?

Snow is rare in Dover because the coastal air is slightly warmer than inland areas. When it does fall, it usually melts quickly. The most likely time is January or February, but accumulations of more than a couple of centimetres happen only every few years.

Why is Dover often windy?

The town sits at the narrowest part of the English Channel, where the gap between England and France is only 21 miles wide. This funnels the wind, especially from the south-west and north-east, making gusts noticeably stronger than in surrounding areas like Canterbury.

Is sea fog a problem in Dover?

Yes, particularly between April and July. When warm air moves over the cooler Channel waters, it condenses into thick fog that can reduce visibility to under 100 metres. It often clears by mid-morning but can hang around all day if the wind is light.
