A cold weather payment checker lets you see if you qualify for a £25 payment when your local temperature drops to 0°C or below for seven consecutive days. The official Gov.uk tool uses your postcode to check eligibility against the Met Office’s recorded data.

How does the cold weather payment checker work?

You simply enter your postcode on the GOV.UK cold weather payment page, and the system matches your location to a weather station. If that station recorded a period of sub-zero average temperatures for seven days, a £25 payment is automatically triggered for eligible households. You don’t need to apply – the payment goes directly to anyone receiving certain benefits, such as Pension Credit or Universal Credit.

When are cold weather payments triggered?

The scheme runs from 1 November to 31 March each year. Payments are issued within 14 working days of a trigger. You can also check past triggers for your area using the online checker. For the latest UK weather conditions that might affect future payments, keep an eye on local forecasts and any moderate rainfall warnings that could indicate prolonged cold spells.

Do I need to claim cold weather payments?

No. Payments are automatic if you receive a qualifying benefit and live in a postcode area where the Met Office records a cold spell. There is no separate claim form – the money is added to your usual benefit payment.

How many payments can I receive in one winter?

There is no cap. Each time your area experiences a distinct seven-day cold spell, you get another £25. You can have multiple payments in a single season if cold snaps are separated by milder periods.

What if I move house during winter?

You need to update your address with the benefit office as soon as possible. Payments are based on your registered postcode for the weather station assigned to that area. Delays in updating could mean you miss a payment.
